Lawson Smith Art shares a young man’s inspiring journey from the devastating effects of a traumatic brain injury to a place of improved well-being and artistic creativity.
Initially conceived to cultivate a sense of purpose for Lawson Smith after the loss of his independence, Lawson Smith Art has become a source of hope for others facing similar challenges.
Lawson lives with cognitive impairment, right-side paralysis, and is non-verbal after a skateboarding accident in 2012 - a poignant reminder to wear a helmet.
The process of art-making became essential to Lawson's rehabilitation at home, enriching his quality of life and facilitating both physical and cognitive recovery.
In November 2013, with a therapist supporting his arm, Lawson managed to hold a pen and attempt to write his name. Within a year, he was able to paint simple shapes without assistance, initiating the Spirit Bird collection. It was completed in November 2014 when Lawson painted Full Circle (Circle of Love) in the company of dear friends whilst celebrating his 22nd birthday.
By 2018, Lawson was supported by an art mentor who introduced the sea sponge method of layering paint. His unique ocean-like paintings became a catalyst for the Marine Stories collection, reflecting his enduring passion for marine conservation and forming the heart of his environmental message through art.
Next came Lawson’s website - a project realised after many trials and tribulations, thanks to the expertise and generosity of a close friend. The original Lawson Smith Art website launched in May 2020, generating extraordinary creative growth, before pausing for a well-earned break 12 months later (see Gratitude).
Lawson's creative journey continued into 2021 and beyond. Collaborating with a local artist, he explored new mediums and techniques to further develop his skills and learning potential. The Nature Boy collection marks a playful period of painting to music, where rhythmic sounds inspired joyful movement and mood.
Fast forward to 2024 - with four collections to his name and a large body of work waiting in the wings - Lawson Smith Art reopens its virtual doors after a long hiatus, unveiling the aptly named series, Resurface.

Happiest by the sea and passionate about conservation, Lawson still has something to say.
Lawson Smith Art shares proceeds from artwork sales with marine conservation organizations, enabling Lawson to continue his life's work.
"The one thing that you have, that nobody else has, is you - your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write, and draw, and build, and play, and dance, and live - as only you can." N.G.
